At Horizon Christian School we believe that educating a child is of the highest calling. Since 1977, we have made that calling our priority by providing quality Christian education for families in the Columbia Gorge area. At Horizon, we are dedicated to helping each student develop their full potential by encouraging academic excellence, integrity, Godly character, and a passion for life. We stress a challenging academic program taught by caring, experienced teachers using the highest quality curriculum with the Bible as the foundation.
Horizon Christian School is accredited by the Northwest Association of Accredited Schools (NAAS).
As an accredited school we are a member of one of the nation’s six regional accrediting associations. Approximately 1,656 public and private schools in the Northwest region are accredited by the NAAS. Being accredited indicates that we subscribe to a process of accountability and voluntary self-regulation that is a constructive experience designed to improve the quality of the school. Accreditation is just one way of ensuring that our school meets specific review standards including minimum environmental standards, a valid school improvement plan, and an on-going self-study and on-site peer evaluation process.
Our pre-kindergarten is fully licensed by the State of Oregon.
2007-08 Enrollment – Nearly 200 students enrolled in Pre-Kindergarten through12th grade.
Class Size – With an average class size of 14 and a teacher-student ratio of 13:1, Horizon provides individual attention, strong teacher relationships, and a customized education plan for students. Our board is committed to a low student-teacher ration in order to maximize individual instruction and attention.
Curriculum – We stress a challenging academic program that includes skill building, critical thinking, spiritual and character development. Christian curriculum provides the core program along with other selected textbooks and materials. Students participate in a full range of classes including language arts, math, science, history, Bible, computer, fine arts (visual art, music, and band), Spanish, physical education and a number of additional electives.
Fine Arts – Students at all grade levels have an opportunity to participate in the music program including primary music, beginning and concert choirs, and beginning, intermediate, and concert bands. Within the visual arts program, which is also offered at all grade levels, students work with a variety of mediums.
Christian Emphasis – Students participate in prayer and discussions about the Bible each day within the classroom and attend Chapel each week. Students often meet on their own initiative for prayer and a parents group meets weekly for prayer. During the first month of each year, Horizon students, parents, and faculty pause to dedicate a day of prayer for our school, community, nation, and world.
“Horizon Hawks”– Students in 5th grade through 12th grade have an opportunity to participate in sports. They excel in soccer, basketball, and golf and are frequent contenders for division titles at the 1A - OSAA level. Our teams offer significant playing time and a chance to develop exceptional sportsmanship.
2007-08 Tuition & Fees – Fees and tuition are based on grade level. Discounts are given for families with multiple students. See Tuition and Fees.
Financial Aid – Financial aid is awarded on the basis of demonstrated eligibility and the total amount of financial aid funding allocated in the budgeting process. The allocation is based on anticipated contributions from friends of Horizon. See Financial Aid.
Dress Code – It is our desire to provide a productive learning environment that includes a modest standard of dress that enhances our goals. Our “standardized dress code” takes the focus off outward appearance and encourages learning and respect for each other. See Dress Code Policy.
